Seeking help and advice

If you feel unable to deal with your debts on your own, and you need to speak to someone who can offer help and assistance in a friendly and non-judgmental manner, then there are a number of charities and organisations that you could contact – us being just one of them!

We do not recommend that you go to any Debt Management Company that charges you for its services. All the information and advice you need can be accessed free of charge from a number of charities and advice agencies. Any money that you pay to a Debt Management Company for their services would be better spent on repaying your debts.

Rather than paying for the services of a Debt Management Company, try contacting one of the following organisations instead.

Debtline

If you live in Norfolk and you are worried about debt, call Debtline and speak to one of our trained advisers, who can listen to your problems and help you to develop a suitable strategy for dealing with your finances.

You can contact us by calling 01603 679678. All of our advice is completely free (we can call you back to save your telephone bill) and confidential. Our lines are open during the following hours:

Monday…………………………………....10am – 3pm
Tuesday…………………………………..10am – 3pm
Wednesday……………………………...10am – 3pm
Thursday……………………………….....10am –1pm

To see an adviser face-to-face, we offer a drop-in service at our city centre office at the Norwich & District Citizens Advice Bureau, Monday to Friday 9:30am – 4pm and Saturdays from 9:30 – 1pm – or alternatively, please call 01603 660857 to make an appointment.

Please note that we are only able to advise people who live in Norfolk (if you live outside Norfolk, then please use one of the other sources help and advice listed below).

Other sources of help and advice.

If you live outside Norfolk, there are still a number of charities and organisations that offer free and confidential help and assistance in dealing with your debts. Remember, you should not have to pay for debt advice. Try contacting one of the following organisations:

  • The Citizens Advice Bureau (or CAB) is the country’s biggest advice service, and helps people resolve their money, legal and other problems by providing free, confidential, independent and impartial advice and information, and by influencing policymakers – and with 496 offices in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, there should be a bureau close to where you live. To search for a Citizens Advice Bureau near you, look in the telephone directory or Yellow Pages, or log on to the Citizens Advice website at www.adviceguide.org.uk for free face-to-face or telephone based advice.

  • National Debtline is a free, telephone-based debt advice agency. You can contact them by calling 0808 808 4000 to speak to someone regarding your debts, or you can find out more information by logging on to their website at www.nationaldebtline.co.uk

  • The Consumer Credit Counselling Service also offer a free telephone-based advice service for people in debt. You can call them on 0800 138 1111 or you can find out more information by logging on to their website at www.cccs.co.uk
