Dealing with Debt: an online guide
Welcome to the debtline-online guide to dealing with your debts. This step-by-step guide will introduce you to a number of principles and activities that will help you to deal with your debts and take control of your finances.

Essentially this is a self-help guide, however, we would always recommend that you seek professional advice when dealing with your debts.

Using this guide

We recommend that you read through this online guide at least once before you begin to deal with your debts. Once you have read through this guide once, you should return to this page and start to work through the guide one step at a time, completing each step before moving on to the next one.

This guide has been divided into a number of steps which will help you to get to grips with your finances and tackle your debt problems.

Step 1 – Getting started

Step 2 – Listing Priorities

Step 3 – Draw up a personal Budget

Step 4 – Negotiating with your creditors

Step 5 – Developing a strategy

Before you begin

Before you start dealing with your debts, you should set aside some time when you know you won’t be disturbed. If you live with your partner, you may want to consider involving them so that you both share the decisions. After all, a problem shared is a problem halved!

We appreciate that it can be difficult to find a quiet moment, especially if you have a full-time job and a hectic family life to juggle. However, you will need to get as much peace and quiet as you possibly can. If you have children, try waiting until you have put them to bed. This way, you can focus all of your attention on your finances.

Turn off the TV or stereo to avoid any distractions and make sure that you are sitting somewhere comfortable and have plenty of space around you to lay all of your paperwork out within easy reach, such as a desk or dining room table.
