Dealing with Debt: an online guide

Welcome to the debtline-online guide to dealing with your debts. This step-by-step guide will introduce you to a number of principles and activities that will help you to deal with your creditors and regain control of your finances.

Essentially, this is a ‘self-help’ guide and has been designed for you to work through in your own time. However, we strongly recommend that you seek professional advice if you are having difficulties in dealing with your debts – please click here for more information on how to seek FREE advice.

Using this guide

This guide has been divided into a number of steps (4 in total). We recommend that you read through this guide at least once before you begin to deal with your debts, in order to familiarise yourself with the processes involved and what will be required of you.

You should then return to the start and begin to work through this guide one step at a time, completing each task before moving on to the next one. Each Step is listed below:

Step 1 – Getting Started

Step 2 – Listing Priorities

Step 3 – Completing a Personal Budget

Step 4 - Developing a Strategy

Before you begin

Before you start dealing with your debts, you should set aside some time when you know you won’t be disturbed. If you live with your partner, you may want to consider involving them so that you both share the decisions. After all, a problem shared is a problem halved!

We appreciate that it can be difficult to find a quiet moment, especially if you have a full-time job and a hectic family life to juggle. However, you will need to get as much peace and quiet as you possibly can. If you have children, try waiting until you have put them to bed. This way, you can focus all of your attention on your finances.

Turn off the TV or stereo to avoid any distractions and make sure that you are sitting somewhere comfortable and have plenty of space around you to lay all of your paperwork out within easy reach, such as a desk or dining room table.
