If you have recently started a new job, and as a result, you no longer qualify for Income Support, Income-based Job Seekers Allowance, Incapacity Benefit or Severe Disablement Allowance, you may qualify for the Extended Payments of Council Tax Benefit.

Do I qualify?

You will qualify for the Extended Payments of Council Tax Benefit if:

  • You or your partner were entitled to Income Support, Income-based Job Seekers Allowance, Incapacity Benefit or Severe Disablement Allowance and your entitlement ended because you started a new job of 16 hours or more each week, or you have increased your working hours to 16 or more hours a week, and

  • You or your partner were entitled to Income Support, Income-based Job Seekers Allowance, Incapacity Benefit or Severe Disablement Allowance for the 26 continuous weeks prior to your new job or the increase in hours commencing.

How much will I receive?

The amount you can expect to receive from the Extended Payments of Council Tax Benefit should be the same amount of Council Tax Benefit you were receiving in your final week of receiving Income Support, Income-based Job Seekers Allowance, Incapacity Benefit or Severe Disablement Allowance.

How do I claim?

You must notify the Jobcentre Plus Office and the Local Authority (council) that you have started a new job or increased your hours of work or earnings. Once you have done this, the Extended Payments of Council Tax Benefit should start automatically.

The Extended Payments of Council Tax Benefit will only be paid for the first four weeks after your entitlement to Income Support, Income-based Job Seekers Allowance, Incapacity Benefit or Severe Disablement Allowance ends – so you must act quickly, or you could lose out!
